This may be a job for a tech. The system should continue to function without communication with the central station.

I would contact a local alarm company to see if they can resolve the issue or if the panel is dead can they re-use the wiring and install a more user-friendly alarm system.

Good luck!

Yes. Any alarm system can be used as a stand-alone system, it just won't report to a central station unless you pay a fee.

If your family member's system stopped working, it may have a zone open. Check the display for a zone number, and make sure all doors and windows are closed.

If there is no display at all, the system may have a dead back-up battery. Check the battery in the main control box (not the keypad used to arm and disarm). These typically last 3-5 years, after which they must be replaced.

Good luck!

with a brinks, no. They are proprietary panels and I assume it was taken offline by a tech before being put out of service since you say it doesnt work anymore.. Theres almost nothing you can do with a Brinks panel without a programmer for them(which are almost IMPOSSIBLE to get for someone not inside the alarm business)

Hi Alejandro,

The DSC 1550 is an old panel, probably 10 years old by now. It is only designed to communicate over telephone (land) lines to a central station.

At the central station, a special alarm receiver gets the call, accepts the signals sent by the DSC panel, and displays it for the central station operators.

As far as I know, there is no other way to get the information sent by a DSC system.

Newer systems are available that can send signals to your cellphone/smartphone. You might want to check on one of these.

Good luck!

@billyshob most glass cutters require impact after scoring the glass which is going to set off the alarm. If your intruders are sophisticated enough in their technology and techniques to defeat this simple measure then you already know that your level of risk requires a more robust set of countermeasures. also you can find models with adjustable sensitivity for just a bit more money.
